Styles of Log Holders

Log holders have a very basic function in the home but they come in many styles.

From small, simple designs intended for enough wood for just one fire to much more elaborate models with attachments for storing kindling and enough wood for many fires. There are even sack styles that allow a fire builder to carry a sack to a wood pile to fill.

Basic, single load holders – these are wonderful for the occasional fire. These are the least expensive types of log holders, starting at about $50. There are basic black holders with no distinctive features; others are made of metal to resemble lace, great for traditional home décor. Still others are chrome plated and very sleek, perfect for a contemporary design home.

Basic log holders are inexpensive, decorative, take up little room – fully loaded they usually take up less than an 18” square – and are easy to stow away in warm seasons.

For homes that rely on fire for heat more than occasionally, a large log holder is needed. While these offer a variety of designs as well, they also vary in features and sizes. Look for one that will hold enough wood for 2 to 4 fires. If you don’t already have a fatwood holder, look for a log holder with optional kindling rack.

Most large log holders are country style with rustic lines reminiscent of log cabins. There are other styles that are less common, like a chrome-plated simplistic design that looks good in modern décor. Large log holders typically start at $90.

Carrier log holders are handy when your wood is stored outside and you only bring in a small amount at a time. Much like a sack for wood, handles are typically attached to either end of a suede or leather strip, usually 18 inches wide and 3 feet long. Children and people with sensitive hands might find this a more convenient way of carrying wood, since there is less likelihood of being scratched.

The handles of carrier-style log holders usually drape over knobs on a curved metal enclosure that supports the suede or leather strap and wood load.
