A Fireplace
Tool You Must Have - The Irondog
The
irondog, also called andirons, are a set of l-shaped supports that
you use to cradle the logs in your fireplace.
When it comes
to fireplace tools, many may think they simply
need to purchase a fireplace tool set that
include the poker, the tongs, brush and shovel
with the holder. The fact is the irondog is a
fireplace tool that you should have for your
fireplace, as well.
The irondog, also called andirons, are a set of
l-shaped supports that you use to cradle the
logs in your fireplace. These will keep the logs
from falling our of your fireplace onto the
hearth. You’ll find them in many styles,
however, don’t look past the antique irondogs,
as they will also have a lot of styles you may
find appealing.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the fireplace
was the only source of warmth in homes. Many
came up with some great designs for the iron
dogs and the name actually came from the fact
that some of the first ones made were in the
shapes of dogs heads. Made from iron, it seemed
only fitting that they would be named the
irondog.
As style and decorating became more common
amongst families, the style of the irondog
changed, as well. You could easily find them in
swirling designs or in the shapes of other
animals, such as horses and owls. Even back in
the late 1800’s the figure of the Phoenix was
popular among many and it came out in the
andirons, as well.
The other tool used to keep your logs from
rolling onto the hearth was the chenet. The
difference between the irondog and the chenet is
a simple matter that the chenet was actually one
piece, while the irondog came in two pieces.
Whether you have a working fireplace or one for
decoration, an irondog set is a tool you should
have. Antique irondogs can be purchased through
many dealers or you’ll find many modern ones
that will appeal to your decorating style.
