Vintage Fire Buckets - A Gift of Old World Charm

Antique fire buckets can still be found in old barns, attics and auctions for very little money.

Before fire departments had water pumper trucks and fire hydrants, firefighters often worked with buckets when battling a fire. While those days are long gone, the buckets they used remain. Considered highly collectable, often commanding high prices, antique fire buckets can still be found in old barns, attics and auctions for very little money.

Many of these old buckets are highly decorated; with either the fire department name or the city, they were associated with or both. Often all that is needed to clean them is simple soap and water on a soft cloth. Work slowly to remove dirt and grime. Never scrub a fire bucket to vigorously as this can remove the lettering or other decoration. Dry thoroughly after cleaning.

A light oiling with either cooking oil or some other light oil can help restore the luster to the metal after cleaning. Beyond that, keeping a vintage fire bucket looking good only requires a regular, light dusting.

Fire buckets were most often made with galvanized steel, although other metals and wood can be found in these items also. Today, the most decorated fire buckets are prized as a fireplace accessory. The most popular use is for holding fireplace tools, either functional or decorative. Decorative tools include the type of fireplace accessories that were useful during the same time period.

Small amounts of kindling can be stored in the antique fire bucket, but never firewood as it can tear seams, or rip though thin metal. Another popular item, mostly for decorative purposes that can give a warm effect to your fireplace is pinecones

Because age and other conditions can affect the stability of a vintage fire bucket, it is recommended that fireplace ashes never be transported or stored in the bucket. For that purpose, always use an appropriate ash can or other suitable device.

Vintage fire buckets can be a wonderful addition to show off your fireplace and your personality. By shrewd shopping, it is possible to find these once lifesaving buckets at a price to meet any budget.

Of course you can always give another type of gift that is perfect for the holidays - a christmas gift basket. These are great for gift giving around the holidays.
