Buying Classic Fireplace Tools

People who believe that the fireplace is the focal point in the home and the center of conversation tend to choose their fireplace tools with care and with a hint of snobbishness reminiscent of the good old days of the English manor.

Did you know that some people who are sticklers for home décor and accessories still order their tools from craftsmen and ironsmiths who don’t really advertise in the daily paper? It seems a secret association exists where fireplace tool makers and consumers get together and conclude a deal quietly. And to think that we now live in a mass-produced society!

But fireplace tools are classic items, and the human, discriminating eye can tell whether they were bought off the shelves at Walmart or from a remote location – a village – a town – that has a craftsman in their midst. Fireplace tools are one of the few items left that are custom made to a customer’s specification or show the genuine mark of hands that have made and shaped tools for decades, a skill no doubt handed down by grandfathers and great grandfathers.

People who believe that the fireplace is the focal point in the home and the center of conversation tend to choose their fireplace tools with care and with a hint of snobbishness reminiscent of the good old days of the English manor.

Today, your fireplace tools will consist of three, four or five piece sets:

  • Back stand – this is a tool that is typically curved or arched and made of cast iron
  • Brush – to keep your firebox and ash bin clear of debris and residuals
  • Tongs – for stirring those hot coals and logs
  • Shovel – good for removing snow as well, but a fireplace shovel helps you remove burned and ash and residual coals
  • Poker – to put coals and burning logs back in place

Over 100 types of fireplace tools are sold in retail stores and choices for style, finish and material abound. One retailer was advertising his tools which he called the Williamsburg line, and this particular set had a unique style and brushed steel rods. There’s another set we saw online made of polished brass that have black steel and brass stands with lacquered brass yokes, finials and accents.

Many manufacturers of fireplace tools will let you buy a tool separately, if you don’t need the entire set, but admittedly, matching tools that look like they belong to one family certainly have a distinctive quality about them.

In addition to the standard fireplace tools, you can give your fireplace some tender loving care by adding accessories such as log carriers, chimney caps, cast iron gates, fireplace rugs and many more!
