Your Fireplace
Tools Are Made to Last but only if…
If
you care for your fireplace tools and keep them clean and in good
condition they should last for a very long time.
You practice
due diligence.
Not that caring for your fireplace tools is
something of a federal case, but if you ordered
them according to specifications and they were
made by expert hands and certified top quality,
you’ll want them to last forever. Fireplaces
come and go, but fireplace tools, if cared for
properly, will outlive you.
Tools are clever inventions of humankind. They
serve a special purpose for a very special need
and if you read through the history of tools,
they have mirrored man’s ability to adapt to his
environment and to make life easier.
If your fireplace tools are made of brass, there
are some measures you can take to protect the
brass finish. Avoid using commercial brass
polish as this could affect the lacquer. It is
usually better to use a soft sponge soaked in
warm soapy water.
If you’re thinking of removing the lacquer
coating, soak the tool in lacquer thinner for
about 60 minutes and then gently wash off with
warm soapy water.
If your tools are made of cast iron, the
coatings may be eroded over time. This is
normal. If rust occurs, sand the area and apply
a rust retardant paint that is available in your
local home center.
We need not emphasize that when handling your
fireplace tools, you need to wear cotton gloves.
When winter is over and it’s time to “retire”
the fireplace, make sure that you handle the
storage of your tools carefully. But before
putting them away in storage, clean cast iron
tools by getting rid of the build-up. You can do
this by hosing them down. Then sprinkle an
abrasive cleanser on the surface and scrub them
with a soft pad.
When dirt, grime and residual matter are
removed, dry the tools and wrap them
individually, including detachable parts, in
acid-free tissue paper. Don’t “bungle” them all
in one storage bin.
There are numerous commercial products that are
great helpers in cleaning andirons and brass
tools. But you can do a rather simple homemade
recipe – dip a steel wool in vegetable oil and
rub the tools gently. And that’s it!
